Critics Consensus

Rendering a list of potentially explosive ingredients mostly inert, The New Mutants is a franchise spinoff that's less than the sum of its super-powered parts.

You know what? It's nowhere near the disaster you'd probably imagine.

Even a mangled bit of Whedonese about a toad struck by lightning could benefit a superhero story this starved for character.

The concept behind The New Mutants is a solid, intriguing one that could've reinvigorated the familiar origin superhero story. Instead, Boone opts for genericism, ending the X-Men franchise with an angsty-teen whimper.

It's not a bad film. It's just boring. It doesn't try to push any boundaries. The only area where they did something different was with the relationship between Dani and Rahne, but aside from that, the story is very limited in its scope.

Josh Boone and Knate Lee deliver a reasonably entertaining screenplay out of the generic zone of the superhero genre, packed with detailed character development and decent horror sequences, especially having in mind the low budget.

Could have been more action. The whole movie takes place in one place. Needed more locations. The little actions scenes it has are pretty good though.

It was long and boring. Action was limited to almost NONE. Action scenes were good ( whenever you had an action scene). It was predictable and a waste of money and time.
