The lush and breathtaking beauty of the Alps, filmed with painterly grace under natural light from frigid winter to redemptive spring, provides the physical and emotional backdrop for 'Vermiglio,' Maura Delpero’s visionary film, which won the Silver Lion at the 2024 Venice Film Festival. This singular portrait of a sprawling family, set in the small, mountainous village of Vermiglio during the waning days of WWII, follows a series of dramatic, consequential events after the arrival of a taciturn Sicilian soldier (Giuseppe De Domenico), who hides out in town after deserting the army. While there, the soldier develops a romance with the family's eldest daughter, Lucia (Martina Scrinzi). 'Vermiglio' shows the lives of a provincial family in a remote village suspended in time by the customs of a fading era. Conjuring stories from her own family's past, Delpero creates a deeply personal and human tale that recalls the great neorealist movement in Italian cinema, but through Lucia's perspective 'Vermiglio' feels distinct and novel.

Critics Consensus

Painterly and patient, Vermiglio carefully observes its provincial milieu to such absorbing effect that audiences will feel like they've become a part of the community.

Director Maura Delpero shows phenomenal restraint in her beautifully observed drama about a poor remote alpine community, set during World War II.

Delpero has made a wise, worldly historical film that isn’t steeped in pessimism or optimism, but realism.

Mikhail Krichman, Andrey Zvyagintsev’s regular cinematographer, finds gorgeous snowy tableaux among the vertiginous heights. The mostly amateur cast are impressive, with Martina Scrinzi a heartbreaking standout.

Its story is moving, and the technical side of the filmmaking is equally worthy of praise. [Full review in Spanish]

This was a beautiful movie that evoked a moment in time… although I was surprised to reread the description that it was just after WWII. This remote village in the Alps was a traditional community… it seemed more like WWI to me. The opportunities for women were very limited. I enjoyed the movie.

Depiction of a tough way of life in alpine Italy. Felt like it was set in much earlier times than 1944. A bit Hardy-esque. Slow moving, in many ways. The story unfolds slowly. The people move slowly. Arty.

Classic art house, definitely not for those of popcorn movie persuasion. Best Italian film l have seen these past few years. Takes its time, allows the characters to develop, lots of children in it. Beautifully shot, at heart concerned with familial love and loss of innocence.

Lovely to look at, but very slow moving — certainly no need to be 2 hours long. If you cut out all the beautiful scenery and brooding it would run all of 15 minutes. Some of the most interesting parts of the story (like the relationship between the matriarch and patriarch) were only hinted at, and not delved into.
