Starman (1984) 83% 3.5/4 EDIT “Setting aside the primitive, goofy-looking visual-effects work and excusing the script's repeated flirtations with cliché and mawkishness, Starman reveals Carpenter as the sensitive, assured director of actors he so rarely gets credit for being.” – Film Freak Central May 12, 2025 Full Review C.H.U.D. (1984) 43% 2/4 EDIT “What C.H.U.D. lacks in style and scares it almost makes up for with a surprisingly fine cast and an offhand kind of social realism. ” – Film Freak Central May 9, 2025 Full Review John Carpenter's Escape From L.A. (1996) 56% 2/4 EDIT “...its CGI is frankly cartoonish, while the composites that make up that surfboard ride down Wilshire Boulevard are...unconvincing...” – Film Freak Central Feb 18, 2022 Full Review The Reckoning (2021) 20% 44/100 EDIT “Imagine a downbeat cross between historical romance, rape-revenge thriller and what's become known as folk horror and you'll have a pretty good idea of the overall mood.” – Bryant Frazer's Deep Focus Feb 5, 2021 Full Review Knocking (2021) 80% 75/100 EDIT “A threadbare narrative that's gorgeously shot, beautifully performed and spooky as hell.” – Bryant Frazer's Deep Focus Jan 31, 2021 Full Review Censor (2021) 89% 54/100 EDIT “It runs a bare 84 minutes and yet manages to feel draggy in its slow-moving first hour and rushed in its eventful climactic segment.” – Bryant Frazer's Deep Focus Jan 30, 2021 Full Review Possessor: Uncut (2020) 94% 95/100 EDIT “A horrifying but finely observed thriller about psychology, cyberintelligence, and that old chestnut, the duality of mind and body.” – Bryant Frazer's Deep Focus Jan 28, 2021 Full Review First Cow (2019) 96% 4/4 EDIT “Impressively rich with period detail and finely drawn characters.” – Film Freak Central Sep 8, 2020 Full Review The Owners (2020) 60% C+ EDIT “Diverting if overly familiar crime drama with horror-movie undertones comes to life when Sylvester McCoy and Rita Tushingham arrive.” – Bryant Frazer's Deep Focus Sep 2, 2020 Full Review Zatoichi (2003) 87% B+ EDIT “A gorgeous and evocative piece of entertainment that takes a deliberately playful approach to its genre.” – Bryant Frazer's Deep Focus Aug 13, 2020 Full Review We Summon the Darkness (2019) 68% 46/100 EDIT “Simply can't wring suspense from a scenario that ends up isolating the murderers from their murderees on either side of a locked door for a long, dull section of the film.” – Bryant Frazer's Deep Focus Apr 8, 2020 Full Review Bad Boys for Life (2020) 76% C+ EDIT “In quieter moments, Martin Lawrence turns in a genuinely touching performance as a man torn between duties to his family and his friend, but Smith is more reliant on a constant feed of mild one-liners.” – Bryant Frazer's Deep Focus Jan 17, 2020 Full Review Knives and Skin (2019) 69% B- EDIT “The film's style can be frustratingly mannered, but Reeder's teenaged characters have some heart and soul.” – Bryant Frazer's Deep Focus Dec 6, 2019 Full Review Detour (1945) 98% EDIT “Detour is about as threadbare as they come: a small film, shot on a shoestring over a handful of days at a Poverty Row film studio. And yet, the finished product is uniquely compelling.” – Film Freak Central Jun 25, 2019 Full Review The House With a Clock in Its Walls (2018) 65% 2.5/4 EDIT “Nobody's idea of an innovative masterpiece, but at least an unpretentious, lavishly designed, and mischievously executed spookshow.” – Film Freak Central Mar 6, 2019 Full Review Piercing (2018) 72% B- EDIT “Dark, contrasty imagery complements increasingly uncomfortable action on-screen, as Piercing settles into an entertainingly twisted groove and a compelling rhythm of give and take.” – Bryant Frazer's Deep Focus Jan 31, 2019 Full Review Ant-Man and The Wasp (2018) 87% 2.5/4 EDIT “These flourishes keep Ant-Man and the Wasp light on its feet...and it doubles down on the first film's fathers-and-daughters themes to moderately heart-warming effect.” – Film Freak Central Nov 26, 2018 Full Review Twilight (2008) 48% 2/4 EDIT “Twilight is an earnest fantasy set on the cusp of adulthood, just as the way the light falls on everything in your life is changing. I don't blame anyone who wants to linger there for a moment. Even with sparkle vampires.” – Film Freak Central Oct 31, 2018 Full Review The Spy Who Dumped Me (2018) 49% 2.5/4 EDIT “The idea of a female-fronted, R-rated spy movie isn't especially novel... but there is something delicious about the notion of a couple of completely ordinary millennials boasting and bluffing their way through a multinational conspiracy plot.” – Film Freak Central Oct 30, 2018 Full Review Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters (1985) 79% 3.5/4 EDIT “As Mishima imagines his new trajectory through the upper atmosphere, Mishima finds its own resting place, and the sleepy drone of Glass's organs swells on the soundtrack, both eerie and comforting--anthem, hymn, and requiem.” – Film Freak Central Sep 5, 2018 Full Review Disobedience (2017) 84% B EDIT “Director Sebastián Lelio's portrayal of the orthodox community is exceptionally even-handed; he doesn't soft-pedal its stifling and anachronistic nature, but neither does he present it as hopelessly cruel or unyielding.” – Bryant Frazer's Deep Focus Aug 9, 2018 Full Review Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991) 91% 3/4 EDIT “Terminator 2 is genuinely reverential towards Arnold, gazing raptly upon his physical form and elevating his lack of affect to something like a Platonic ideal of masculinity.” – Film Freak Central Jul 25, 2018 Full Review The Hurricane Heist (2018) 47% 3/4 EDIT “It's an impressive level of craft brought to bear in the service of nothing more than filling out your lazy Saturday afternoon.” – Film Freak Central Jun 13, 2018 Full Review Escape Plan (2013) 50% 2/4 EDIT “For old-school action fans, the sight of Arnie's automatic weapon spraying bullets that rip through flesh and send dark spatters of blood tracing patterns through the air like grim fireworks may still quicken the pulse...” – Film Freak Central Jun 5, 2018 Full Review An Actor's Revenge (1963) 95% 3/4 EDIT “Hasegawa's carefully-modulated performance is treated with admiration, and Yukinojo is by any consideration a tragic creation--a magnetic personality with no interest in making friends, an avatar of sensitivity who rejects intimacy in favour of justice...” – Film Freak Central May 11, 2018 Full Review
