Injecting a heavy dose of hormones and humor into the Star Trek universe, Starfleet Academy marks a refreshing tonal shift that proves this franchise still has plenty of new thematic territory to explore.

The sets are brighter, the dialogue is sharper, with more expletives than expected from the elders as well as the kids, and the character development is strong across the board. Go to Full Review

“Starfleet Academy” is not a particularly serious story... When the show wants to be funny, though, it is. Go to Full Review

A promising collection of characters and storylines just setting the table for future achievement, not quite ready to prove its value beyond the legends of Kirk and Spock. Go to Full Review

School’s in session for a new class of space cadets in “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy,” the latest series from the late Gene Rodenberry’s universe, this year celebrating its 60th anniversary. Go to Full Review

It works, at least for my soft sci-fi brain. It's fun, heartfelt, and refreshingly easy to navigate, even when the technobabble ramps up. Go to Full Review

Justin S @OperaHero 10h Perfectly woke, and a return to hope! Wouldn't recommend for the "Trek was never woke" painfully misinformed "Trekkies". But three episodes in, I'm very much enjoying the cast, and the vibes. Don't mind the pearl clutchers, go in with an open mind and enjoy! See more Jim B @JimBerkman 10h This is a great addition to the Star Trek universe. At first, I wasn't sure of Holly Hunter as Captain/Chancler, but she ends up fitting the ensemble. It's a good rebuilding series set in the Federation/Starfleet rebuilding years after "The Burn." Overall, the characters are fun to watch, and there is the requisite hopefulness we expect in a Star Trek weekly. If you haven't seen it yet, I suggest giving it a few episodes before making any decisions, since the first episode has a lot of backstory to cover before settling into its serialized rhythm. See more Ana C @LunaRaven19 11h Been watching Star Trek for 40 years since I discovered the original while in my teens, and I gotta say I love how they switch up the genres, storylines, and characters. This latest entry is full of promise: by leaping a thousand years into the future, past a galactically cataclysmic event, they've essentially rebooted the franchise and given it new creative freedom. Loving the adult characters, with Tig Notaro, Gina Yashere, Bob Picardo (chefs kiss to his acting), and Holly Hunter anchoring some solid performances so early in the season. Still not sure about the kids yet, but honestly all teens annoy me, so not sure it's the writing or acting or just me. Still, off to a promising start. Too bad for all the review bombing from people who never watched the show. Give it a chance. The first 3 episodes have very different feels. See more Nope N @Noppers 11h While there are show is trying to be relatable, it is not so much. Muting the show made it more fun. I will say, I look forward to Star Trek being good again See more Shawn @WistfulStargazer 11h This series is so terrible, I couldn't even get through the first episode without stopping and coming back to it multiple times. As a story, it doesn't hold my interest and in a time where we need the hope and dreams of a future where humanity can be a better version of itself - Paramount has utterly failed to deliver any of the spine or character that defines Star Trek. Call this something else. This timeline should be erased, not because of any political leanings. It isn't that bold, unique or woke. It's just bad. Once, Star Trek went against convention, this is as conventional and irreverent to canon as one can be. It is worse than Discovery, nearly as bad as Section 31 and should be eradicated from the timeline entirely. See more Jason L 11h I've been a Star Trek fan since TOS, and there's a lot to complain about with Academy.. But that's true about any spin off series when you compare it against the others. That said, Academy is a nice thing to watch and I definitely enjoyed each episode so far (despite all the things they got wrong). Is it DS9 or TNG, no it's not, but it's better than Enterprise 😉 If you're watching it to pick holes, don't bother (it's too easy), if you're watching it because you miss new Trek material, then settle down for some good, easy watching TV.
