Tim Brennan

Tomatometer-approved critic
Biography:

Tim has been alarmingly enthusiastic about movies ever since childhood. He grew up in Boulder and, foolishly, left Colorado to study Communications in Washington State. Making matters worse, he moved to Connecticut after meeting his too-good-for-him wife. Drawn by the Rockies and a mild climate, he triumphantly returned and settled down back in Boulder County. He's written numerous screenplays, loves hiking, and embarrassed himself in front of Samuel L. Jackson. True story.

Movies TV Shows
Mercy (2026) 24% EDIT “On the surface, the script is a riff on Minority Report and The Fugitive, only updated to reflect our current anxieties. Dig a little deeper and you’ll see that it’s a script that never gets below the high-gloss facade.” – About Boulder Jan 26, 2026 Full Review 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple (2026) 93% EDIT “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple is one hundred percent worth the risk. It’s an outstanding film that functions due to its laser focus on character.” – About Boulder Jan 19, 2026 Full Review No Other Choice (2025) 97% EDIT “When it comes to showing the horror and humor of capitalism, is No Other Choice a masterpiece? If it isn’t, it’ll do until a masterpiece comes along.” – About Boulder Jan 12, 2026 Full Review Bitter Desire (2025) EDIT “The core idea of this script isn’t bad, and in principle, I have nothing against erotic thrillers. But it needed a few serious passes to improve the structure, up the tension, and enhance the characterization.” – About Boulder Jan 5, 2026 Full Review The Dummy Detective (2025) EDIT “If you’re making a movie about a ventriloquist detective, you need to be prepared to go to some strange places. What we’re left with is a screenplay that promises something much weirder than it actually delivers. ” – About Boulder Dec 15, 2025 Full Review Time Travel Is Dangerous (2024) 76% EDIT “Presumably, Reading had a microscopic budget, yet his film never feels cheap. It’s got a charming handmade quality, as if everyone pitched in to create ingenious practical solutions instead of throwing money at problems.” – About Boulder Dec 8, 2025 Full Review Marty Supreme (2025) 93% EDIT “Safdie’s tone here is a little different from his work on Uncut Gems. It’s a little looser, funnier, and ever so slightly optimistic.” – About Boulder Dec 1, 2025 Full Review Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery (2025) 92% EDIT “Wake Up Dead Man is a strong contender to be the best in the Benoit Blanc series.” – About Boulder Nov 24, 2025 Full Review The Running Man (2025) 62% EDIT “As I watched the film, I kept thinking that it felt like an action movie from the 90s, such as The Rock or Speed. One of those films based around a ridiculous central premise that digs into the concept. ” – About Boulder Nov 17, 2025 Full Review A HOUSE OF DYNAMITE (2025) 75% EDIT “The bad news is, each time the timeline is re-set, tension drains from the film. Then more time needs to be taken to focus on new characters while also jacking the tension back up. It’s an extremely gutsy decision, and the execution doesn’t quite work.” – About Boulder Nov 10, 2025 Full Review Sincerely Saul (2024) EDIT “When it comes to Sincerely Saul, I believe that if you are a) a sentient human being who is b) alive, you will not have a nice time with this movie. I also believe that director Ian Tripp has made precisely the film he’s set out to make.” – About Boulder Oct 30, 2025 Full Review Frankenstein (2025) 85% EDIT “He’s made a film that simultaneously honors the nineteenth century source material and feels relevant to the twenty-first century. ” – About Boulder Oct 20, 2025 Full Review Roofman (2025) 87% EDIT “For the most part, Cianfrance’s tone matches the personality of the main character. It’s likable, bouncy, and very often feels less plot-driven and more of a genial hangout movie. ” – About Boulder Oct 13, 2025 Full Review Good Boy (2025) 90% EDIT “From a technical perspective, Leonberg’s direction is so skillful that it should be in this year’s Academy Award conversation. ” – About Boulder Oct 6, 2025 Full Review The G (2023) 100% EDIT “From time to time, we’re treated to a solid movie featuring an outstanding lead performance that elevates the whole damn thing. That’s exactly what The G is. ” – About Boulder Sep 29, 2025 Full Review The Long Walk (2025) 88% EDIT “ The Long Walk is a good movie. Maybe not one of the best of the year, but it has fearsome power, and it balances that with unflinching humanity.” – About Boulder Sep 22, 2025 Full Review Make Me Famous (2021) 100% EDIT “Oh, you’ve never heard of Edward Brezinski? Don’t worry, this documentary will fix that. ” – About Boulder Sep 15, 2025 Full Review Unpacking (2022) EDIT “While a lesser screenplay would reduce the characters to cliches, this script drills down into real, three dimensional characterization. We see why these women have come to the retreat, what they think of each other, and what they think of themselves.” – About Boulder Sep 1, 2025 Full Review Magnetosphere (2024) 100% EDIT “For every comedy moment, there’s a quieter moment where we see how Maggie views the world for good or ill. Those moments feature lovely animation that’s so deliberately chosen, we intuitively understand what Maggie is feeling and experiencing.” – About Boulder Aug 26, 2025 Full Review Highest 2 Lowest (2025) 83% EDIT “Do you love movies like Highest 2 Lowest, movies large enough to fit the greatest city in the world and the heart of a desperate man? Because if so, you know what you need to do.” – About Boulder Aug 18, 2025 Full Review Tim Travers and the Time Traveler's Paradox (2024) 81% EDIT “Tim Travers and the Time Travelers Paradox is sophisticated, crude, sleek, occasionally plodding, and ridiculously ambitious. Just like the title, the movie itself is a paradox.” – About Boulder Aug 11, 2025 Full Review The Naked Gun (2025) 87% EDIT “The Naked Gun is proof that spoof movies might be the hardest genre of film to pull off. Being that stupid takes immense intelligence.” – About Boulder Aug 4, 2025 Full Review The Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025) 86% EDIT “The 1960s retrofuturism production design pops, and it provides the film with a welcome degree of style and energy. ” – About Boulder Jul 28, 2025 Full Review Eddington (2025) 68% EDIT “Most of Eddington is effective. Long stretches of it pull us back to those dangerously dumb days of May 2020, and remind us what it was like. I wonder if Ari Aster set himself up to fail, by asking what the pandemic meant. ” – About Boulder Jul 21, 2025 Full Review Superman (2025) 83% EDIT “It’s important you know that James Gunn has made possibly the comic bookiest comic book movie in the history of the genre. Gunn’s film feels like you’ve been handed issue #237 of the Superman comic book and are expected to keep up. From” – About Boulder Jul 14, 2025 Full Review
