Mabel, Mabel, Tiger Trainer (2016) 3/4 EDIT “As a pioneer in a job once unavailable to women, Stark is certainly unique in her contributions and toughness. ” – Video Librarian Magazine Nov 5, 2025 Full Review Shadow (2018) 94% 3.5/4 EDIT “It's always good to see this side of Zhang's work. "Shadow" will not soon be forgotten.” – Seattle Times May 9, 2019 Full Review 2019 Oscar Nominated Shorts - Animation (2019) 92% 3/4 EDIT “Academy members need a collective hug. How else to explain the weird abundance of films about children in severe distress, and aging adults ruminating on loss and mortality?” – Seattle Times Feb 5, 2019 Full Review 2019 Oscar Nominated Shorts - Live Action (2019) 82% 3/4 EDIT “Academy members need a collective hug. How else to explain the weird abundance of films about children in severe distress, and aging adults ruminating on loss and mortality?” – Seattle Times Feb 5, 2019 Full Review Stella's Last Weekend (2018) 67% 1.5/4 EDIT “The basics of Draper's story hold promise, but the film derails because Jack and Oliver just aren't charming as social pariahs.” – Seattle Times Oct 26, 2018 Full Review Matangi/Maya/M.I.A. (2018) 90% 3/4 EDIT “It is fascinating to watch M.I.A. develop into middle-age as, inevitably, the sum of her own best efforts.” – Seattle Times Oct 4, 2018 Full Review Te Ata (2016) 65% 2.5/4 EDIT “An illuminating, sometimes moving intersection of history, family conflict and the sort of rising, individual destiny that can nudge a nation along in its progress.” – Seattle Times Oct 4, 2017 Full Review Pearl Jam: Let's Play Two (2017) 80% 3/4 EDIT “A shotgun marriage of Cubs history and powerful performances, including a casual Pearl Jam session on a pub roof that fills the streets below.” – Seattle Times Sep 26, 2017 Full Review I Do... Until I Don't (2017) 29% 2.5/4 EDIT “It's when resolution begins to sink into this circle of troubled love that Bell begins to find herself as a filmmaker, making room for grace notes, resonant personality and lilting humor.” – Seattle Times Aug 30, 2017 Full Review Ripped (2017) 0% 2/4 EDIT “Lightly amusing in a Cheech and Chong way, though its central fantasy concept sputters to near-irrelevancy.” – Seattle Times Jun 22, 2017 Full Review Middle Man (2016) 3/4 EDIT “In more careless hands, Middle Man's deranged farce could have resulted in an unchecked, undisciplined movie with nothing to say. But beneath the roller-coaster madness here is an earthbound terror that art is meant to reveal.” – Seattle Times Jun 9, 2017 Full Review Angkor Awakens: A Portrait of Cambodia (2016) 93% 4/4 EDIT “A riveting and illuminating documentary about the rise of the Khmer Rouge in the 1970s and how its shockingly mad and bloody legacy continues to impact Cambodia today.” – Seattle Times May 24, 2017 Full Review Fight for Space (2016) 100% 3/4 EDIT “Equally electrifying and agonizing ...” – Seattle Times May 17, 2017 Full Review Your Name (2016) 98% 1.5/4 EDIT “As pleasing as some aspects of "Your Name" can be, there's no question Shinkai's overstuffed movie often trips over itself.” – Seattle Times Apr 5, 2017 Full Review For Here or to Go? (2015) 41% 2/4 EDIT “"For Here or to Go?" offers an insightful group portrait but lacks imagination in a romantic subplot and (except for a requisite Bollywood-style dance number) is visually dreary.” – Seattle Times Mar 29, 2017 Full Review Bitter Harvest (2017) 15% 1.5/4 EDIT “It looks and feels like a harmless television movie from 30 years ago - perhaps because its director, George Mendeluk, has been churning out TV content ("Riddles of the Sphinx") at a brisk clip since 1977.” – Seattle Times Feb 22, 2017 Full Review Emily (2017) 3/4 EDIT “You feel hints of a strange energy in "Emily" that remind us we don't always know why we do what we do in relationships. The hard part is holding on for the ride.” – Seattle Times Feb 1, 2017 Full Review Paterson (2016) 96% 3/4 EDIT “Driver's performance as an uncertain man getting through the day-to-day prosaic, quietly buoyed by passion and artistic commitment, is exquisite.” – Seattle Times Jan 12, 2017 Full Review Railroad Tigers (2016) 40% 3/4 EDIT “While the film's sometimes gritty violence is surprising for an action comedy, delightful moments abound, too, such as a scene in which Ma's men argue over the proper key for a peasant song.” – Seattle Times Jan 4, 2017 Full Review The Hollow Point (2016) 40% 2.5/4 EDIT “"The Hollow Point" might not reach the hallucinatory heights of a Joel and Ethan Coen thriller, but there's much to admire.” – Seattle Times Dec 15, 2016 Full Review I Am Not Madame Bovary (2016) 85% 2/4 EDIT “The script by Liu Zhenyun becomes ponderous and redundant, kept on oxygen by its lead actress's complex performance as a child-woman with enigmatic wisdom.” – Seattle Times Nov 17, 2016 Full Review The Charnel House (2016) 33% 2/4 EDIT “Efficient if predictable ...” – Seattle Times Nov 2, 2016 Full Review The Alchemist Cookbook (2016) 84% 3/4 EDIT “A chapter-driven series of sketchy scenes powered by a striking, manic performance by lead actor Ty Hickson.” – Seattle Times Nov 1, 2016 Full Review The Whole Truth (2016) 35% 2/4 EDIT “The film's bleached colors and Reeves' trademark woodenness add to its emotional remoteness, though Basso, Zellweger and Belushi create a convincing family in crisis.” – Seattle Times Oct 20, 2016 Full Review Ordinary World (2016) 53% 3/4 EDIT “The film distinguishes itself by what it lacks: simple, unrealistic answers to Perry's regrets and the hole in his soul.” – Seattle Times Oct 13, 2016 Full Review
