Quirt Evans (John Wayne), a cowboy on the run, is injured when his horse stumbles near a Quaker family's land. The family takes him in as he regains his health, and he falls for their young daughter, Penelope (Gail Russell). As Quirt falls deeper in love and becomes accustomed to the family's peaceful ways, his violent past starts to catch up to him. Eventually he is forced to decide whether it is worth letting go of his turbulent former life for his future with Penelope.

With its stunning Flagstaff, Arizona locations and a breezy tone, the John Wayne-produced "Angel and the Badman" is a delightful mix of romance and action, with excellent chemistry between the leads.

I recently rewatched The Uninvited which featured Gail Russell in a major role. I noticed her performance wasn't up to par with the rest of the excellent cast, so I looked her up. What a tragic story! In her biography it's mentioned that Wayne's wife accused him of having an affair with Russell at the time, which they both denied, but that would explain the chemistry between the two in Angel And The Bad Man, which is probably one of the good things it has going for it. Otherwise, the production looks rushed with little attention to detail. It's also a mixed genre flick; a fusion of Romcom, Noir, and Western.

Like "The Quiet Man", I enjoy the thoughtful John Wayne character learning and changing as a person. Only found this movie a few years ago, it's now my favorite Duke movie!

Perfectly passable if not overly entertaining 1940s oater with John Wayne. If you like that sort of thing you'll like this movie. If you don't, Angel and the Badman won't change your mind.
