What to Know

Critics Consensus

Chris Rock holds nothing back when dishing on the infamous slap heard around the world, but his "Selective Outrage" is mostly an undercooked routine full of jokes that skew more stale than relevant.

Audience Says

Chris Rock spends too much of this special putting his spin on hot topics in comedy instead of finding something new to talk about, but he still has great delivery and definitely claps back on “the slap.”

Craig Mathieson The Age (Australia) 03/16/2023
He’s treading water at times, but the invariable finale where he reflects on being slapped by Will Smith live onstage at the Academy Awards is stinging: a settling of a score somehow both righteous and vituperative. Go to Full Review

None of the jokes will rise to the level of iconic, or even memorable, I’m afraid. Yet Rock reminds us of his icon status simply by opening his mouth. His delivery works when nothing else does—and, in Selective Outrage, little did. Go to Full Review
Izzy Ampil BuzzFeed News 03/08/2023
Rock’s personal grievance with Smith is legitimate, but by trying to mash it into the shape of a cultural cautionary tale, he does himself and his comedy a disservice. Go to Full Review

“misogynoir can come even from those who are Black, who were raised by Black women and profess to value Black people.” In this show in particular, Chris Rock is the poster-boy for misogynoir. Go to Full Review
James Delingpole The Spectator 03/16/2023
I personally don’t begrudge Rock the gazillions he earns from this shtick. But as with fellow masters of the art you cannot help but think: what a gloriously easy way to earn a living! Go to Full Review
Ben Schwartz The Nation 03/16/2023
Both more and less than comedy, funny but also the occasion for a lot of clapter from Rock’s fans. Rock delivered on all the expectations swirling through social media over the past year, but it’s also OK if we never hear about that slap again. Go to Full Review

Duane C @Duanekneebotz Jan 17 Most people while writing their reviews weren’t paying attention and most of Rock’s brilliance flew over your head because the whole time you’re trying to process it, you have half a mind focused on hearing about the slap. I decided to wait til my third viewing. I purposely did this because it takes time to process Rock’s brilliance and make no mistake, Rock is a genius. He didn’t launch into what everyone wanted to hear immediately and that was the "Suge Smith" slap incident, and many viewers only paid half attention to everything else he formulated and said. I loved this material! Some of the best he has been involved with. And when he tackled the Smith incident, what he promised, " that it would be funny", he delivered on. Comedy is truth and tragedy packed together inside delivery. Very few do it as well as this man, and this is a must see. If you’re reading this, Rock, bravo brother. Bravo! I saw what you did and how you played it and it couldn’t have been done better! U da massa See more Michael C 09/26/2024 He has become a uncle tom. Kissing the man's ass every chance he gets That is from a white man. Chris, fuck you and the damage you have done. Enjoy the money, for pissing on your ancestors graves. See more Petros T @PetrosTserpelis 01/09/2024 "Selective Outrage" isn't without some strong comedic moments - you know, the ones where the artist makes an unexpected and on-point connection that tickles your brain. Unfortunately though, those moments aren't the ones prevailing here, for this is an arguably overlong special comprised mostly of far from challenging material, long gaps between punchlines, an insistence on verbatim repetition of phrases and a frantic energy that's limited to the delivery but is absent from the jokes themselves. See more Kandy A 12/26/2023 This is not a funny man. He's an angry man. A very opinionated angry man who is not worth listening to. See more Doug J 07/17/2023 Chris Rock appears to be struggling to achieve the leading edge, insightful, hilarious comedy that he'd authored in the past. Hope it's just a temporary slump.
