Entirely filmed using stop-motion, Hori’s film has clear influences as far back as Metropolis and as iconic as Alien. The design of each creature is imaginative with a tactile quality, and the subterranean world feels successfully seedy and dirty.

Humans live longer but suffer infertility issues. An android is sent to the abandoned lower depths to learn how an evolved species reproduces. Virtually a one man job by Hori, this is the firts of a proposed trilogy. Creative and weird. I loved it. The creatures speak a garbled hockaloogy style of language so subtitles are required. I loved the way Hori frames his shots of his miniatures and the design of said figures. Very original. Recommended

You'll love this movie if you're into stop motion and like dark science fiction that doesn't take itself super seriously. I'm so surprised that more people don't know about this masterpiece.
