The film stands out, above all, for the aesthetic values that are reflected in the infernal sequences through journey of Dante and Virgil, but in its silent fable there is no consistent degree of emotion. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Using aesthetics and visuals to capture the poetic horrors of this story, there is a weight and terror found within L'Inferno that can only be achieved through the cinematic platform. Go to Full Review

I know of no higher commendation of the work than mention of the fact that the film-makers have been exceedingly faithful to the words of the poet. They have followed, in letter and in spirit, his conceptions. Go to Full Review

Samuel R 10/16/2024 Full of disturbing imagery and silent film magic, Dante's Inferno is an unsettling and entertaining journey through hell. See more James H 04/05/2022 Truly haunting with its visuals, this silent film managed to be more terrifying than most horror films today See more andy f 08/01/2021 A masterpiece of silent film, it is incredible to think this was released in 1911. The imagery still haunts and bedazzles over 100 years later. See more 07/21/2020 Stark and dreary, but richly detailed and perfectly paced. I am told it is Italy's first feature-length film, so kudos for such technical achievement. You can really believe that those sinners are suffering. See more 02/15/2016 Impressive for 1911. Very surreal journey of Dante going to hell, guided by Virgil...explaining the various circles. Dante meets people he knew personally, and those he heard about, and seeing their terrible sufferings because of their sins when living. Really groundbreaking See more lovro h 10/06/2015 I currently have Dante's Inferno to do a book report on for class, so I've also decided to check out this movie about it, in order to simplify some of the things from the book for me. I was very interested in Dante and his Divine Comedy for a long time, and now that I finally HAVE to read it, I decided it's a good time to watch the movies, as well. So, the movie is great! It's faithful to the book and it manages to capture the circles of Hell very well. For the time it was released in, it must've been one of the most amazing things ever, now 114 years later, it looks like crap. I mean, Hell still looks great and the costumes are all very creative, but let's be honest. The effects are crap. You probably think I'm crazy for saying effects look bad on a movie that is 114 years old. This just proves the movie hasn't aged very well, quality-wise. The story and the premise is still interesting, though! There isn't any soundtrack, at least not on the version I watched, so it was literally a silent movie. All in all, a truly great and interesting look into the Hell as it was imagined by Dante and is really worth the watch if you need to read the book for school, as it does really make it easier to understand.
