Eric D. Snider

Tomatometer-approved critic
Biography:

I was born and raised in Lake Elsinore, Calif. (it's boring; don't go there!). I graduated from Brigham Young University with a B.A. in journalism, and once killed a guy with my bare hands in a bar fight in Tijuana. I was film critic and various other entertainment-y things for a daily paper in Utah, and now work as a freelance writer. I have a column called "Snide Remarks" that I publish on my Web site, as well as an e-zine (fancy word for "e-mail newsletter") of movie reviews called "In the Dark." In addition to my own site, I write for Film.com and Cinematical. When I grow up, I want to be Scott Weinberg.

Favorites:

Memento, Fight Club, Toy Story 2, Mary Poppins, Lord of the Rings trilogy, Raising Arizona, Anchorman, Jaws, Psycho

The Wiz (1978) 38% EDIT “These large-scale production numbers are unfailingly flat and emotionless. The sets are huge, even cavernous, with dozens of bizarrely costumed dancers executing stiff, joyless choreography. ” – EricDSnider.com Nov 11, 2025 Full Review Rebel Without a Cause (1955) 91% EDIT “There's no question that Rebel Without a Cause has been influential, and that some of its mythic status comes as the result of Dean's tragic death just before it was released.” – Film.com Oct 23, 2025 Full Review Supergirl (1984) 19% EDIT “Anyone who watches “Supergirl” should feel insulted by it.” – EricDSnider.com Jun 26, 2025 Full Review Teen Witch (1989) 43% EDIT “It does present a positive message, which is that no matter how unpopular you are you can always call upon the powers of the dark lord Satan to make people like you.” – EricDSnider.com Feb 16, 2024 Full Review Go for Sisters (2013) 73% EDIT “Tighter scripting and a more focused storytelling approach would have helped. Even as it stands, though, the film is a compelling, unassuming little morsel worth checking out.” – ScreenAnarchy Sep 12, 2023 Full Review John and the Hole (2020) 60% B EDIT “Slow-burn psychological horror... I was intrigued, amused, and compelled.” – Crooked Marquee Feb 16, 2021 Full Review How It Ends (2021) 69% B+ EDIT “Brimming with cheerful, absurd humor.” – Crooked Marquee Feb 16, 2021 Full Review Marvelous and the Black Hole (2020) 84% B- EDIT “The kind of movie where all that its defenders, myself included, can really say for it is, 'Aw, come on, it's cute!'” – Crooked Marquee Feb 16, 2021 Full Review Prisoners of the Ghostland (2021) 62% C+ EDIT “Like a lot of Nicolas Cage movies, Prisoners of the Ghostland is full of Awesome Things ... and yet somehow it's still kind of boring.” – Crooked Marquee Feb 16, 2021 Full Review CODA (2021) 94% B EDIT “It's easy to forgive a few tired tropes when they're surrounded by such humanity.” – Crooked Marquee Feb 16, 2021 Full Review Cryptozoo (2021) 71% B EDIT “If you ever drew dragons on your school notebooks this movie is for you.” – Crooked Marquee Feb 16, 2021 Full Review Coming Home in the Dark (2021) 92% D EDIT “Wallows in misery and cruelty without any payoff or satisfaction.” – Crooked Marquee Feb 16, 2021 Full Review Human Factors (2021) 69% C+ EDIT “Keeps things interesting with a simple gimmick, but ultimately too full of red herrings.” – Crooked Marquee Feb 16, 2021 Full Review R#J (2021) 50% B+ EDIT “I was surprised at how successfully R#J wooed and charmed me with its mix of Shakespeare and modern youthful exuberance.” – Crooked Marquee Feb 16, 2021 Full Review Tell Me Who I Am (2019) 97% B EDIT “Their story is fascinating and unsettling, and the film tells it without sensationalism.” – Crooked Marquee May 23, 2020 Full Review Bad Boys for Life (2020) 76% B- EDIT “All the ridiculousness of a '90s action flick, only without the gay-panic jokes and the gleeful shots of people dying and their corpses being desecrated. Progress!” – Crooked Marquee Jan 18, 2020 Full Review A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (2019) 95% A- EDIT “You know pure goodness when you see it, and Hanks thoroughly conveys the goodness in Mister Rogers.” – Crooked Marquee Nov 25, 2019 Full Review Parasite (2019) 99% A- EDIT “A scathing satire-farce-tragedy-horror... You might not like where it goes, but you certainly won't forget it.” – Crooked Marquee Nov 11, 2019 Full Review Motherless Brooklyn (2019) 65% B- EDIT “A satisfyingly twisty story in the 'Chinatown' mold.” – EricDSnider.com Oct 29, 2019 Full Review Countdown (2019) 26% C EDIT “It's like Final Destination without the cleverness, The Ring without the scariness.” – Crooked Marquee Oct 28, 2019 Full Review Greener Grass (2019) 83% B- EDIT “An absurdist suburban satire, arch and surreal... Wears thin before it's over, but it made me laugh enough overall to recommend it.” – Crooked Marquee Oct 24, 2019 Full Review Zombieland: Double Tap (2019) 68% C+ EDIT “Hit-or-miss follow-up that brings back the original cast of post-zombie-apocalypse survivors just to put them through the same paces as last time.” – Crooked Marquee Oct 19, 2019 Full Review The Lighthouse (2019) 90% A- EDIT “A fabulous, unnerving sea chantey meant to rattle us with slow-burning madness.” – Crooked Marquee Oct 18, 2019 Full Review The Kitchen (2019) 24% B- EDIT “The ultra-lean screenplay has no chitchat, no color, no personality. But the actors have plenty of charisma and magnetism of their own, which makes the movie passable grown-up entertainment.” – EricDSnider.com Oct 16, 2019 Full Review Bit (2019) 93% B- EDIT “It's all about as good as low-budget vampire flicks tend to be, with an added flicker of righteous anger.” – EricDSnider.com Oct 16, 2019 Full Review
