Julia Swift

Tomatometer-approved critic
Biography:

After years of writing for network television while shooting her own festival award winning indie shorts on the side, Julia Swift realized her favorite part of working in media was being able to talk about film with people just as obsessed as she is. Swift left Los Angeles and moved to idyllic Vermont where she can be seen every Friday morning on WFFF's At The Box Office. Her roles on the selection committee for the Vermont International Film Festival (VTIFF), as a member of the Broadcast Film Critics Association (BFCA) and as an Assistant Professor of Filmmaking at Champlain College allow her to train and uplift the next generation of artists and innovators.

Sentimental Value (2025) 97% 10/10 EDIT “In this triumphant, emotional film, Trier and Vogt explore the universal experiences of family, art, love, passion and work. Reinsve's deep authenticity combines with the craft of editor Bugge Coutté to create a uniquely powerful experience. ” – My Champlain Valley Nov 20, 2025 Full Review Left-Handed Girl (2025) 98% 8/10 EDIT “Go see Tsou Shih-Ching's beautiful, special film. A dive into what happens in a multi generational family in Taiwan when the freedom and desperation of the present collide with the constraints of tradition and the past. ” – My Champlain Valley Nov 15, 2025 Full Review Jay Kelly (2025) 75% 9/10 EDIT “A joy to see in theaters, Noah Baumbach's film pays homage to old Hollywood madcap comedies at the same time it delves deep with intense emotional moments. ” – My Champlain Valley Oct 31, 2025 Full Review Watch the Skies (2022) 76% EDIT “This charming film will remind audiences of the awe they felt with classic films like E.T. The end of the script falters, but still maintains the tone of unabashed sincerity that makes us fall in love with the quirky underdog characters. ” – My Champlain Valley Oct 3, 2025 Full Review BTS Army: Forever We Are Young (2025) 8/10 EDIT “This fabulous film is about the fans who discovered BTS and really fought for them. It shows the power of fan support and the ability of fandoms to make people feel less alone. ” – My Champlain Valley Oct 3, 2025 Full Review Swiped (2025) 44% 6/10 EDIT “Swiped is an inspiring and tragic tale of the founder of women-centered dating app Bumble. Actress James skillfully disappears into the role. After so many male founder stories, it's refreshing to get insight into one of the few female tech founders. ” – My Champlain Valley Oct 3, 2025 Full Review Shell (2024) 63% 7/10 EDIT “The Shell's comedy, bordering on high camp, is grounded by Elisabeth Moss who can make any script feel real. The film is a super fun ride that then makes you want to talk about the themes - and that is one of the great joys of going to the movies.” – My Champlain Valley Oct 3, 2025 Full Review Highest 2 Lowest (2025) 83% 4/10 EDIT “One of my favorite scenes of the year, between A$AP Rocky and Denzel Washington, is buried in a mess of half baked ideas in this Spike Lee remake of an Akira Kurosawa masterpiece. ” – My Champlain Valley Aug 31, 2025 Full Review Freakier Friday (2025) 73% 9/10 EDIT “Freakier Friday is a joyride celebrating family bonds that lets Jamie Lee Curtis revel in her brilliant comedic mastery. Go see it in a theater where you can laugh and cry with a crowd and feel the community. Can't wait for the next Nisha Ganatra film. ” – My Champlain Valley Aug 9, 2025 Full Review Sorry, Baby (2025) 97% 9/10 EDIT “This film makes me hopeful for the future of cinema. Ava Victor's fantastic writing and directing beautifully explore how friendship can help people find the power to heal from trauma. ” – My Champlain Valley Jul 16, 2025 Full Review Yadang: The Snitch (2025) 87% 7/10 EDIT “The film transcends the action genre with smart, layered writing and directing that allows the audience to connect with the actors on a deeper level. ” – My Champlain Valley May 2, 2025 Full Review Stripped for Parts: American Journalism on the Brink (2023) 100% 8/10 EDIT “More people need to see this film. The interviews, news and articles highlighted bring to light a sea change in American Journalism that has been swept under the rug. The documentary's style is slow and old fashioned, but keep going. It's worth it. ” – My Champlain Valley Mar 14, 2025 Full Review Ex-Husbands (2023) 76% 7/10 EDIT “The characters stay with you long after the film ends. The editing was masterful - kept the pace going when the script wandered. Pritzker elicited strong, natural performances from the actors. ” – My Champlain Valley Feb 25, 2025 Full Review Emilia Pérez (2024) 71% 9/10 EDIT “Sublime, unforgettable. The best film I've seen in years. It made me believe in the magic of cinema again. If you've given up on hoping to be swept away by movies, see this film. Karla Gascon was wonderful. I wanted more Zoe Saldana, more Selena Gomez.” – My Champlain Valley Oct 4, 2024 Full Review I'll Be Right There (2024) 86% 7/10 EDIT “It’s really the first time that I’ve seen this [mother/child super close] relationship portrayed in a way where it's like ‘this can be a mother’s choice and a child’s choice that doesn’t have to be negative.’ That can be a positive, loving choice.” – My Champlain Valley Sep 23, 2024 Full Review Borderlands (2024) 10% 1/10 EDIT “This is the worst movie I have seen in years. Lots of top talent looking very uncomfortable. I'm assuming they didn't read the script before signing on for this mess. ” – My Champlain Valley Aug 23, 2024 Full Review Smoking Tigers (2023) 100% 7/10 EDIT “This soulful coming of age drama takes a while to grab onto the hearts of the audience, but once it does, it won't let go. The characters will follow you for days. ” – My Champlain Valley Aug 23, 2024 Full Review Suncoast (2024) 76% 9/10 EDIT “Wonderful first film by writer/ director Laura Chinn. This deeply moving and fresh coming-of-age story works on multiple levels, leaving audiences in its thrall long after the credits roll. ” – My Champlain Valley Feb 10, 2024 Full Review American Fiction (2023) 93% 9/10 EDIT “Best screenplay of the year. ” – My Champlain Valley Dec 11, 2023 Full Review Choose Love (2023) 30% 3/10 EDIT “Super exciting to see an interactive movie that is made for adults. If only they had spent more time on the script. ” – My Champlain Valley Nov 24, 2023 Full Review Flora and Son (2023) 93% 4/10 EDIT “The story of the mom and her son has some strong moments, but the rest of the film falls into female stereotypes. Many moments that should be emotional feel so unreal, they push the audience out of the suspension of disbelief. ” – My Champlain Valley Nov 24, 2023 Full Review May December (2023) 91% 9/10 EDIT “Todd Haynes will make you feel for the characters long after the credits end. See it with friends and then get ready to talk, argue, dream and scheme about where the characters go next. There will be Oscar nominations. There should be Oscar wins. ” – My Champlain Valley Nov 24, 2023 Full Review Kill Boksoon (2023) 79% 6/10 EDIT “If you love well-choreographed fights – this film is for you. The cinematography is also choreographed, but not motivated by characters. This makes it hard to connect to the characters, except for Boksoon played by Jeon who always brings depth. ” – My Champlain Valley Mar 29, 2023 Full Review Babylon (2022) 57% 2/10 EDIT “So bad it's shocking. Such of waste of acting talent. This is what happens when Hollywood calls someone a genuis and lets them create without ever having to think twice about any of their decisions. ” – My Champlain Valley Feb 1, 2023 Full Review A Man Called Otto (2022) 70% 7/10 EDIT “A sweet story of the power of community to bring someone back from the brink of suicide. A film like this depends on the performances - and here there are some weak links and some standout performances. ” – My Champlain Valley Feb 1, 2023 Full Review
