Hit Man (2023) Dan Buffa Linklater’s movie moves like a jazz tune, but it’s more style than substance. Either it wasn’t for me, or I wanted more.

A-
Empire of Light (2022) Dan Buffa That’s what Mendes is trying to get across here. Black, white, damaged, undamaged, young or old, pretty or ugly… the movies and the castles that house them are like our best friends; they like us no matter what.

B
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022) Dan Buffa If there’s one compelling callback to the lost T’Challa that really works, it’s the Queen who has seemingly lost a good chunk of her family and now is faced with its greatest threat. Bassett is the brightest light here.

A
The Banshees of Inisherin (2022) Dan Buffa Capturing unstable humanity, along with black comedy and the brevity of life changing our decisions daily, within a motion picture isn’t easy work, but McDonagh strikes a nice balance of moods and tones.

B+
Black Adam (2022) Dan Buffa It is NOT all doom and gloom, thankfully. It has a tongue placed firmly in its cheek and a sly sense of humor, never allowing the movie to get too light or dark; just the right amount of entertainment and humor. The Rock gets to let loose.

B
The Redeem Team (2022) Dan Buffa If you don’t cheat and look up the final score, the last 10 minutes of the documentary will enthrall you. Pure basketball fans will eat it up, but the casual ones can soak it in too. The cinematic touch takes care of that.

C-
Halloween Ends (2022) Dan Buffa David Gordon Green's finale lacked cohesion and direction, framing it as a trilogy letdown instead of placing a nice, bloody stamp mark on it.

Facing Nolan (2022) Dan Buffa Ryan’s story should be told and celebrated for decades. He’s as old school as it gets, but I have a feeling young baseball fans, even ones who never got to see him pitch live on television, will get a kick out of this.

B
The Greatest Beer Run Ever (2022) Dan Buffa It’ll get you acquainted with a guy who didn’t think impossible was a thing. It’s a detached joy to watch a movie where a character does something you would never dare do, and later find out that it really happened.

A-
Causeway (2022) Dan Buffa Lawrence is superb. I couldn’t recall her character’s name when I started writing this review, but that wasn’t a big deal because her performance was all I could think about.

A
Stutz (2022) Dan Buffa Instead of just being another documentary, Jonah Hill’s courageous film opened its doors and just let the audience in. Much appreciated. Highly recommend.

C
The Fabelmans (2022) Dan Buffa Spielberg made a nice little fable about his life, but there are zero chances taken and little urgency to the film. LaBelle does his best to inhabit the young man, but the role swallows him up in certain scenes and just leaves him standing idle in others.

B+
Violent Night (2022) Dan Buffa If there’s one thing about Harbour that has always sung, it’s the charisma he can generate with just about material and any actor on screen. He’s also a very big man, standing tall and making a dad bod seem more desirable than Zac Efron ever could.

B-
Mr. Harrigan's Phone (2022) Dan Buffa While Hancock’s script has a lot on his mind and the ideas become frayed with the second and third act unfolding sporadically, there’s something hauntingly restrained about this horror/thriller hybrid.

C+
Lou (2022) Dan Buffa This is another serviceable Netflix actioner that will do the trick for a late night watch, yet won’t be something on your mind the following morning.

A-
The Menu (2022) Dan Buffa It’s a slow-building revelation that will result in a gasp, and then it just builds on the “out there” abilities of a thriller/horror hybrid. Come for Ralph Fiennes, but stay for the outrageously bizarre finale.

B
Women Talking (2022) Dan Buffa It’s got a real stage play vibe to it, which isn’t my cup of tea, but the overall power of the film’s climax helps the film stick its landing.

B
Aftersun (2022) Dan Buffa Delicate and not rushed, the full brunt of this film’s impact didn’t strike me. However, the final scene does wrap a deft bow around the lingering mystery.

B-
Bones and All (2022) Dan Buffa Mark Rylance lifts up the show with this creepy, older eater who tries to take Russell’s free spirit under his wing. Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross put together a beautiful score and the film definitely walks to its own beat. Easier to admire than love.

B
Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (2022) Dan Buffa Coming in at a brisk 100 minutes & carrying enough pop culture humor to fill two movies, this sequel gives you the goods. It’s a ticket to the Antonio Banderas show. He puts in wonderful voice work, infusing the sword-savvy feline with charisma & passion.

B-
Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (2022) Dan Buffa Craig and Monae have the most fun and give easily the best performances. When they’re together on screen, it’s as if they are aloof to the rest of the movie and cast. The rest of the movie, though, tries so hard to top the sizzle of the original.

A-
The Woman King (2022) Dan Buffa The film is shot impeccably well, scored passionately, and gives the viewer something to savor as they leave the theater.
Posted Feb 08, 2023Edit critic review
B+
Pearl (2022) Dan Buffa It isn’t your standard horror film, and the movie is better for it. While some filmmakers could ease their foot off the pedal for their second round, West keeps his engaged to the floor here.

B+
Sniper: The White Raven (2022) Dan Buffa If there’s one takeaway outside of solid acting and a satisfying conclusion, it’s that the process of becoming a sniper and how one lives and operates is properly explored here.

C
Three Thousand Years of Longing (2022) Dan Buffa This high-profile slow-boiling story of connection and unusual romance walks to its own beat for sure, just not one I liked or would prefer to revisit again.

C
Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul. (2022) Dan Buffa I don’t fault the players. Brown and Hall are great and enrich the material, but they fall victim to a thin screenplay that can't decide if it wants to be a dark comedy with a message or a thought-provoking drama.

A
Cha Cha Real Smooth (2022) Dan Buffa It’s Johnson who just steals this film. It’s Domino who is endlessly interesting, surprising, and maturely written–and the actress just runs with the role.

B+
The Gray Man (2022) Dan Buffa What I also loved about this movie was the lack of an unneeded romantic subplot, and the fact that all the females in the cast weren’t brainless skirts simply there to fix the men or let them save their life.

B
Samaritan (2022) Dan Buffa Stallone delivers in the role, one with a few layers to it, delivering a thunderous battle cry in the finale. That’s the cherry on top. Schut’s screenplay has a compelling third act element to it that lifts the material up a notch.

A-
Prey (2022) Dan Buffa What Trachtenberg gets wonderfully right here is not simply paying homage to the original and crafting a decent hunt/showdown, but laying ground for its own originality throughout the film.
Posted Sep 09, 2022Edit critic review
C-
Bullet Train (2022) Dan Buffa The film needed more of that rebellious yet natural energy instead of the “he killed my wife, I’m mad about that” vengeance diet. What could have been pretty cool ended up being very dull and forgettable.

B+
Vengeance (2022) Dan Buffa Character richness shines in Novak's debut. The plot doesn’t exactly sprint but does intrigue enough, even if it is a tad too much on the timely nose.

C
Nope (2022) Dan Buffa Here’s the thing. I never got a sense of what Peele wanted this film to be, outside of mildly shocking and thrilling. The worst thing a film critic can leave a theater with is confusion over what the package delivered was supposed to mean or infer.

B+
Good Luck to You, Leo Grande (2022) Dan Buffa An unconventional, “march to its own beat” film that slowly lays into you, story-wise. The beginning is simple and interesting enough for most proper age groups to digest it, which helps the buy-in factor when the tone gets more serious.

B
Thor: Love and Thunder (2022) Dan Buffa What makes the film durable and winning is the rare blend of comedy and serious drama weight, which is pushed through by a game cast.
Posted Sep 09, 2022Edit critic review
B
Minions: The Rise of Gru (2022) Dan Buffa By bringing in a couple of veteran talents to the voice cast in Arkin and Yeoh, the freshness abides in this sequel--instead of being a stale, shameless money grab that gets forgotten after the lights come up.

A
Wild Men (2021) Dan Buffa My mood changed after watching this wonderfully wacky and sincere crime caper/comedy hybrid. The minutes fly nearly as smoothly as the dialogue from the dynamite cast, including a terrific Bjorn Sundquist as the eccentric yet endearing sheriff.

A-
Gabby Giffords Won't Back Down (2022) Dan Buffa If the documentary leaves you with one thing, it’s that Giffords is truly one of a kind. There won’t be another like her. Anyone should be inspired, moved, and empowered to join her fight to restrict the reach of guns after watching this movie.

B
The Black Phone (2021) Dan Buffa While little here should resonate after a few weeks, the young cast and Hawke work like gangbusters to administer a few legit JUMP scares throughout to keep the audience honest and ready to be shocked.

B+
Spiderhead (2022) Dan Buffa Something a little scary, a little berserk, and very self-aware. Believe it. This movie works on its own level, operating on a platform that isn’t looking for awards or adoration. Just your attention.

C
Elvis (2022) Dan Buffa Misguided attempts to jam both Presley and Parker's stories into one cohesive mix was a gamble for any filmmaker, but even Baz couldn't pull it off.
Posted Jun 24, 2022Edit critic review
C
Lightyear (2022) Dan Buffa Pixar is running out of storytelling tricks, a downward trend punctuated by this pointless and often-lifeless origin tale.
Posted Jun 20, 2022Edit critic review
B+
Hustle (2022) Dan Buffa Once you establish a connection with and a care for Stanley-the rest of the movie is playing with a 15-point lead. If the movie has a Lebron, it’s Sandler. Basketball dramas are his new comfort zone.
