Make Me Famous (2021) M. Faust ...a treasure trove of images, home movie footage and interviews regarding the East Village scene...now lost to a fog of gentrification and business.

Freaky Tales (2024) M. Faust [Although the] finale is too gruesome for mass audiences ... it is the definition of a cult movie, made with clear affection for its characters and the era it seeks to recreate, and with the expectation that not everyone is going to get it.

The Friend (2024) M. Faust The Friend rambles on a bit longer than it should have ... but it is an engaging, relatable drama that was a pleasure to spend time with.

The Ballad of Wallis Island (2025) M. Faust It’s notable that the script ... resists going where you expect it to. But it doesn’t really go much of anywhere, meandering on to a dramatic revelation ... that isn’t actually all that dramatic.

That They May Face the Rising Sun (2023) M. Faust [It] reminded me of two other films about the simple pleasures of everyday life, Wim Wenders’ Perfect Days (2023) and Jim Jarmusch’s Paterson (2016). All have found inspiration in the work of Yasujiro Ozu, Japan’s patron saint of contemplative cinema.

Fight or Flight (2024) M. Faust Reminiscent of the gleefully ludicrous action extravaganzas of Matthew Vaughn (Kick-Ass, Argylle, the Kingsman series) ... Fight or Flight isn’t exactly a comedy but uses humor to offset what would otherwise be a stomach-churning amount of violence.

Jane Austen Wrecked My Life (2024) M. Faust [Writer-director] Laura Piani cites Ernest Lubitsch, Billy Wilder, James Ivory and Mike Leigh as inspirations for her first feature ... a pleasant chance to enjoy in a theater the kind of romantic comedy that has largely been shifted to streaming.

Friendship (2024) M. Faust Tim Robinson got his start as a writer/performer on “Saturday Night Live.” Did none of those people warn him about all the flop films based on SNL characters? Friendship demonstrates that those who do not remember film history are condemned to repeat it.

Kill the Jockey (2024) M. Faust What held my attention ... is the precision of Ortega’s direction. Working with DP Timo Salminen, known for his long association with Finland's Aki Kaurismaki, Ortega maintains a drolly distanced tone that is the factor holding it all together.

Shoshana (2023) M. Faust Moments of narration filling in gaps between scenes give the impression that this two-hour film may have been whittled down from something longer, though it would take a miniseries even to begin to do justice to all the history converging here.

Relay (2024) M. Faust Highly recommended, especially if you’re a fan of the paranoid thrillers of the 1970s... It’s a testament to both the filmmakers and the actor that [star Riz] Ahmed compels our attention despite not having any dialogue for the first half of the film.

The Pornographer (1999) M. Faust Writer-director Doug Atchison’s film avoids cheap thrills in favor of strong characterization and difficult moral questions

Highest 2 Lowest (2025) M. Faust Lee’s adaptation [of Akira Kurosawa's 1963 classic HIGH AND LOW] is anything but a slavish remake. Quite the opposite: it short shrifts so much of the original story that after a while you start wondering where Lee’s real interest lies.
