The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (2009) Gregory Weinkauf One of the greatest motion pictures ever. From its astounding themes to its brilliant cast, stunning design to enchanting score, undeniable smarts to lasting significance, this is Cinéma! Buy this movie. View this movie. Marry this movie. I have spoken.

The Lodger (2009) Gregory Weinkauf A smart and creepy thriller transposing a classic London tale to in-your-face modern Los Angeles. Helmer David Ondaatje's deft handling of actors and subtle twists demand a second viewing.

Slaves of Hollywood (1998) Gregory Weinkauf As astute, insightful and ticklishly truthful a Tinseltown tale as Billy Wilder's Sunset Boulevard and Christopher Guest's The Big Picture. Mandatory -- and funny! -- viewing for any and all who dare enter the Biz.

Starship Troopers (1997) Gregory Weinkauf Massive, hilarious and thrilling.

Edward Scissorhands (1990) Gregory Weinkauf Between this masterpiece and that other Ed (Wood), TIm Burton and Johnny Depp are at their dual-career best. Ed Wood is about how insane Hollywood is -- and Edward Scissorhands delivers the pure magic that, once in a rare while, escapes the place.

Sherlock Holmes (2009) Gregory Weinkauf Ritchie provides big dumb fun, but it's hard to imagine worse casting than Bob Downey, Jr. Maybe Verne Troyer or RuPaul. Downey's self-important bluster and lousy accent ruin the film. But pleasing score from Hans Zimmer's team.

Event Horizon (1997) Gregory Weinkauf Where's the application form for the job where you get paid to rip off the lamer and more bombastic aspects of Barker, Kubrick and Scott? I'm sorry I missed that notice.

Knowing (2009) Gregory Weinkauf If those space-dudes are so friendly, why drive children insane with a bunch of weird code? Why not just show up on The Tonight Show and tell everybody the exact date and time? Lame! Also: Why fake Massachusetts? Why not just say: 'This is Australia.'

Deep Blue Sea (1999) Gregory Weinkauf Some upscale action-cheese -- plus who doesn't love Cool J? But the movie's exposition and plotting are mega-lame; Kurtzman & Orci probably pray to Deep Blue Sea every morning.

Terminator Salvation (2009) Gregory Weinkauf One of the coolest post-apocalyptic thrill-rides since the respective career peaks of Charlton Heston and Mel Gibson.
Posted May 20, 2009Edit critic review
Star Trek (2009) Gregory Weinkauf It's been thirty years since I last found myself at the movies, rooting for a black hole.

Observe and Report (2009) Gregory Weinkauf One exits feeling not amused, but sullied, weary.

I Love You, Man (2009) Gregory Weinkauf I love I Love You, Man.
Posted Mar 19, 2009Edit critic review
Watchmen (2009) Gregory Weinkauf Watchmen rules.
Posted Mar 04, 2009Edit critic review
Valkyrie (2008) Gregory Weinkauf Ultimately it is redeemed by its palpably clammy sense of foreboding, plus its offering of a valuable history lesson.
Posted Jan 12, 2009Edit critic review
Burn After Reading (2008) Gregory Weinkauf A bunch of pieces in search of a puzzle.
Posted Jan 12, 2009Edit critic review
Happy-Go-Lucky (2008) Gregory Weinkauf A cute but shallow and generally sloppy enterprise.
Posted Jan 12, 2009Edit critic review
Tropic Thunder (2008) Gregory Weinkauf Is this a comedy -- or a cry for help?
Posted Jan 12, 2009Edit critic review
Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008) Gregory Weinkauf No amount of pretty scenery can conceal the tedium.
Posted Jan 12, 2009Edit critic review
The Dark Knight (2008) Gregory Weinkauf The Dark Knight is grim, loud, ugly, mean and disjointed (four out of five ain't bad!); thus, as an evening of fanboy fodder it's very hard to beat: Call it The Dork Night.

Glastonbury (2006) Gregory Weinkauf Super-scintillating. We're fortunate to have a bright, bold documentary like Glastonbury to remind us how fun, weird and wonderful life can be.

Starter for 10 (2006) Gregory Weinkauf The spirit of the music -- above all -- really does hold this movie together.
Posted Feb 18, 2007Edit critic review
The Pursuit of Happyness (2006) Gregory Weinkauf Sings the blues with all the authority of Barry Manilow.
Posted Dec 11, 2006Edit critic review
The Good German (2006) Gregory Weinkauf I tousle the hair of The Good German, pat it on the butt, and tell it to eat its vegetables so one day it may grow up into a real Motion Picture.
Posted Dec 08, 2006Edit critic review
The Nativity Story (2006) Gregory Weinkauf Well conceived. Indeed, there's something about Mary.
Posted Nov 30, 2006Edit critic review

Posted Oct 13, 2006Edit critic review
The Wicker Man (2006) Gregory Weinkauf Idiotic, presumptuous and definitely unnecessary.
Posted Sep 05, 2006Edit critic review
No Direction Home: Bob Dylan (2005) Gregory Weinkauf A competent but fawning, focusless and utterly overlong tribute to a terribly mediocre entertainer who 'sings' like a bumblebee barfing. Bloated Boomers, feel free to be interred with a copy. Soon.

Posted Jul 24, 2006Edit critic review
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006) Gregory Weinkauf It's mostly a moody thing, awash with dark and gruesome hues, possessed of a lost and aching spirit. Yay that!

Posted Jun 27, 2006Edit critic review
A Prairie Home Companion (2006) Gregory Weinkauf If ever there were a venue in this region in dire need of Prince dropping by, this is it. These Twin Cities folks desperately need to swap NPR for the NPG.
