4/5
7 Boxes (2012) James Rocchi Directed by the team of Juan Carlos Manegelia and Tana Schmbori, 7 Boxes also has the verve, vigor and vitality of the best low-budget debuts; watching it, I felt the same vibe I did from Reservoir Dogs or El Mariachi or Primer.

Cheap Thrills (2013) James Rocchi Cynical, amoral, tense and superbly shot and performed.

Battle of the Year (2013) James Rocchi A dead-in-the-soul cash grab of a movie set in the competitive world of B-boy dancing that thinks clichs, phony melodrama and product placement can substitute for real storytelling and actual characters.

The Last Days on Mars (2013) William Goss I had to wonder, could I be watching the next remarkably brainy piece of sci-fi, this year's Moon? But then the first space zombie gutted a concerned colleague with a power drill, and in that moment, I knew exactly what I was in for.

Planes (2013) James Rocchi "Planes" borrows a world from "Cars," but even compared to that soulless exercise in well-merchandised animated automotive adventure, "Planes" is dead in its big, googly eyes and hollow inside.

4.5/5
The Spectacular Now (2013) James Rocchi The Spectacular Now is a finely-made, assured and deeply felt film that still has hope and love in it, precisely because it understands, and shows, what hope and love cost.

R.I.P.D. (2013) Glenn Kenny ... the execution is pretty lively, irreverent, visually engaging, and every now and then almost actually witty.

Red 2 (2013) James Rocchi What's interesting about 'RED 2' is that, not only is it better than its predecessor, it is miles better ...

Turbo (2013) Glenn Kenny the movie seems to understand its own near-abject ridiculousness ... without getting overly nudge-nudge wink-wink ...

4
The Conjuring (2013) Kate Erbland ... it surpasses the hallmarks of its genre with an actually dramatic storyline and all-around solid acting. Just don't think you can go see it alone.

The Act of Killing (2012) James Rocchi "The Act of Killing" is disquieting, uncomfortable ... and riveting."

4/5
Despicable Me 2 (2013) James Rocchi Heartfelt and hilarious, smart and silly, action-packed but never violent, "Despicable Me 2" is that rare sequel that outshines its beginnings.

Heli (2013) William Goss ...ultimately comes off as an empty piece of provocation.

A Band Called Death (2012) Kate Erbland ... a must-watch for fans of punk music, vinyl record wonks, or even those interested ... a visionary entertainment dream.

I'm So Excited! (2013) Glenn Kenny 'I'm So Excited' is bursting with color, sass and sexiness ... it maintains a light feel throughout.

White House Down (2013) Glenn Kenny 'White House Down' is, at certain moments, a good time in spite of itself. I, for one, was certainly glad when it was over.

The Heat (2013) Kate Erbland ... a rapid-fire script and the inspired pairing of Bullock and McCarthy make 'The Heat' one of the funniest films of the year so far.

2/5
The Internship (2013) James Rocchi There are plenty of films out there competing for your money ... 'The Internship' doesn't even deserve a part-time gig ...

This Is the End (2013) Glenn Kenny ... the movie definitely struck a chord with the crowd I saw it with ... (with) a climax that brings bromance back ...

Man of Steel (2013) Glenn Kenny Even though some of the attempts at gravitas don't work, the movie does make you believe that a flying man in tights is a thing of scary awe.

3.5/5
The East (2013) James Rocchi Marling and Batmangli are smart enough to know that character and ideas matter, and how the presence of those things can improve action and suspense.

We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks (2013) James Rocchi Alex Gibney's latest, "We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks," is very good -- manage to do both.

2/5
Epic (2013) Glenn Kenny A 3D eco-fantasy whose mantra-like insistence that we're all connected by nature is one of the main things that underscores the abject insincerity of the sentiment as the movie articulates it, "Epic" is very nearly epic in its stifling mediocrity.

4.5/5
Before Midnight (2013) Glenn Kenny the actual give-and-take between the characters is uncomfortably emotionally accurate, which means it will make an excellent, if challenging, date movie for both new and old couples.

The Hangover Part III (2013) James Rocchi This third installment could easily be dismissed as too little, too late, if only it weren't in fact too much, too late.
Posted May 24, 2013Edit critic review
Blue Ruin (2013) William Goss The violence is unfailingly nasty, the humor suitably dark, and the human center holds due to Dwight's endearingly short-sighted, continually fallible, yet understandably just mission against those who squandered his own happiness decades before.

4/5
We Are What We Are (2013) James Rocchi We Are What We Are is a re-make that succeeds superbly while remaining true to the strange and sad intimately grotesque spirit of the original.
Posted May 20, 2013Edit critic review
The Congress (2013) William Goss ...commits to Big Ideas of identity and integrity with Robin Wright remarkably anchoring it all as, well, herself. (Sort of.)
Posted May 19, 2013Edit critic review
Inside Llewyn Davis (2013) William Goss To call Inside Llewyn Davis a minor work doesn't render it any less a pleasure to watch; it's to admit that the film's melancholy depiction of the '60s folk scene in Greenwich Village (and beyond) may only improve in the interim.
Posted May 18, 2013Edit critic review
The Bling Ring (2013) William Goss Doesn't explore the who's and why's of the scenario so much as the how's and why-not's.

The Expatriate (2012) Glenn Kenny 'Frances Ha' is the most purely enjoyable and sweet-tempered movie the exceptionally talented Baumbach has made his nearly two decades as a director.

The Expatriate (2012) Kate Erbland 'Erased' is an entertaining enough action outing with plenty of well-done elements to recommend it.

3.5/5
Star Trek Into Darkness (2013) Glenn Kenny What this movie does with a not-unfamiliar-to-some story is pretty clever, and the incarnation of a classic villain by British cheekbone virtuoso Benedict Cumberbatch is vivid and engaging.

4/5
Star Trek Into Darkness (2013) James Clive-Matthews A glorious nostalgia trip, continuing the Star Trek reboot in style through a cunning meld of the best of 1980s action sci-fi with high-end 2013 glossiness.

Pain & Gain (2013) Glenn Kenny Behind the lunatic corruption of Pain And Gain there's a kind of monstrous clarity. Do with it what you will.

Tyler Perry's Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor (2013) Kate Erbland Perry's film lags and limps along its two-hour runtime before finally going whole hog on one of the most dizzyingly weird final acts in recent cinematic history.

Wrong (2012) Kate Erbland Dupieux doesn't make films for everyone, but he does craft creative and abstract trips that are more than worth going on, even if they're fantastically difficult to explain to anyone who has yet to join the club.

G.I. Joe: Retaliation (2013) Glenn Kenny When it comes to big and loud, this is the movie to beat for at least this week; what makes it entertaining is its unabashed wallow in these qualities ...

Gimme the Loot (2012) Glenn Kenny ... 'Gimme the Loot' isn't the kind of film where a lot happens, but that's it's small-scale magic ...

Spring Breakers (2012) Glenn Kenny ... 'Spring Breakers' is a gas to look at and to hear, and it's easily Korine's most successfully sustained work."

Olympus Has Fallen (2013) Glenn Kenny ... the action is often not unengaging, and Butler's better at swinging for faux Bruce Willis ...

Admission (2013) Glenn Kenny If Fey ends up making movies as good as this one over the next few years, television's loss will have been cinema's gain, for real.

V/H/S/2 (2013) William Goss Just imagine the kind of anthology that might yet be born should all involved be held to the evident highlights of these films so far.

Sightseers (2012) William Goss Lowe and Oram get along with wonderfully neurotic chemistry, making it easy to root for them in spite of their newfound bloodlust.

Berberian Sound Studio (2012) William Goss The first two acts are funny and fun in their moody evocation of both the period and the genre, but right around when Gilderoy starts to lose his mind, Berberian begins to lose its way.

Miami Connection (1988) William Goss Miami Connection may not be a good film in any conventional sense, but it's great in countless ways.

Wrong (2012) William Goss Those on its perpetually absurd wavelength should soon find themselves left in fits of giggles.
